What is a total vaginal hysterectomy?
A total vaginal hysterectomy
requires Drs. Simon or Grade to make an incision near the top of the vagina for
the surgery. Through this incision Drs. Simon or Grade will skillfully cut and
tie off the ligaments, blood vessels, and fallopian tubes and then remove the
uterus and the cervix. Once the uterus and cervix are separated from the pelvic
cavity, they are removed through the vagina. The total vaginal hysterectomy
typically takes one to two hours. The hospital stay is usually one to three days
and most patients return to normal activities in about three to four weeks.
Are there alternative and less invasive surgeries that I could have?
After your initial consultation, Drs. Simon or Grade will evaluate your medical
condition and assess if you are a potential candidate for one of the new
alternatives to a hysterectomy. However, in most cases, a total vaginal
hysterectomy is appropriate for conditions such as uterine prolapse,
endometrial hyperplasia, or cervical dysplasia.
How will a total vaginal hysterectomy
affect my sex life?
Drs. Simon and Grade will help answer all your
questions about post-surgery affects on your sex life. Research shows that every
woman has a different reaction after having a hysterectomy. And, it is evident
that the reactions are partially emotional responses to this life-changing
event. Drs. Simon and Grade are great communicators and are sensitive to their
patients concern for maintaining a healthy sex life after a hysterectomy.
However, for many women, their sex life is enhanced after a hysterectomy because
of the absence of pain and complications.
