You are not alone if heavy periods interfere with your life.
One in five women suffers from heavy periods. Common symptoms of heavy periods include:
- Soaking through at least one pad or tampon every hour for several hours
- Periods that are heavy and last more than 7 days
- Formation of clots
- Fatigue and paleness (may be a sign of anemia)
Many options are available to treat menorrhagia - the medical term for menstrual periods that are too heavy, too frequent, or last too long.
Options include drug therapy, minimally invasive treatments, and hysterectomy.
Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure to treat menorrhagia. This procedure has been around for years, and
is performed by board certified gynecologists. Endometrial ablation destroys the lining of the uterus (endometrium) and by
doing so periods are reduced or eliminated.
Endometrial ablation has a high rate of reducing menstrual bleeding - with no incisions. There is no need to remove the uterus or disrupt
the natural hormones. One treatment is usually all that is required. And best of all, this treatment can be performed in your doctor's office.
Speak with your healthcare provider today about this safe and effective treatment option for heavy periods.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to a number of physical and emotional symptoms noted before a women's menstrual period, including mood changes,
irritability, breast tenderness, headache and fatigue. The degree to which these symptoms affect women varies greatly. Some women may respond to
nonpharmacologic treatment including lifestyle modification and diet changes. Medications are an option for some women and include serotonin reuptake inhibitors,
hormonal contraceptives, anti-anxiety medications, and anti-inflammatory medications. Some women prefer a more "natural" approach including the use of vitamins,
minerals, and other supplements.
Calcium has been shown to help with the treatment and prevention of PMS. Calcium in a dose of 1000 to 1200 mg/day can improve mood, bloating, food cravings, and pain. The use of calcium can take a few months to see an improvement. Magnesium in a dose of 360 mg/day can improve mood and decrease bloating as well.
Vitamin B6 might help with PMS symptoms, including depression. A dose of 100 mg/day should be sufficient. Chasteberry seems to improve breast tenderness, constipation, and mood. Doses vary depending on the product. Vitamin E in a dose of 400 IU/day has also been linked to improvement in physical symptoms and some mood symptoms.
Of the supplements studied for treatment and prevention of PMS, the best data is available for calcium. Taking 1000 to 1200 mg of calcium per day can improve symptoms of PMS and provide long-term health benefits including a decreased risk of osteoporosis. Adding Vitamin D at a dose of 400 IU/day along with the calcium may prevent the development of PMS and will help keep bones strong.
