What is a
hysterectomy surgical procedure?
A hysterectomy surgical procedure involves removing a woman's uterus (or
womb). There are times when the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and cervix are removed
during the hysterectomy surgical procedure. All of these organs are located in
the female’s lower abdomen and the cervix is located at the lower end of the
uterus.
What are the different types of hysterectomy surgical procedures?
There are three types of hysterectomy surgical procedures
which include an abdominal hysterectomy, vaginal hysterectomy, and
laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy.
- The abdominal hysterectomy requires a 4-6”
incision in the abdomen
through which the uterus and other reproductive organs (if necessary)
will be removed.
- The vaginal hysterectomy requires a smaller
incision near the top of
the vagina. Through this small incision, the uterus is cut and then
removed through the vagina.
- A laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy
uses a laparoscope,
which is a slender tube with a tiny camera, that is inserted through a small
incision in the abdomen. Other small tools are inserted through the tiny
incisions to perform any necessary cutting and tying of blood vessels,
fallopian tubes, and ligaments. The uterus is then removed through a
small incision just above the vagina.
